The ultimate forced induction package for the MX-5 NC

Since BBR launched its NC MX-5 turbo conversion in November 2013, over 600 of our clients (December 2021) have opted for our fully installed and DIY packages. Our turbocharged conversion delivers efficiency and flexibility unrivalled by other forced induction means, such as supercharged etc. The BBR Stage One turbo conversion delivers an incredible 100bhp+ gain running just 7psi of boost pressure with over 200lb.ft of torque available from just 3000rpm to 7000rpm!

The BBR MX-5 turbo is the only conversion fully designed and developed in-house and manufactured in the UK. Our bespoke BBR cast iron exhaust manifold, internally wastegated genuine Garrett exhaust housing, custom made carbon fibre turbocharger heatshield and utilisation of the OEM air box base with BBR OEM look airbox cover are just a few of the key components that separate the BBR turbo from far inferior imported options (with external wastegates, fabricated exhaust manifolds etc). There are no gimmicks, just great hardware of OEM quality, ensuring maximum reliably and longevity, with turbo boost pressure preset to the desired level.

From the beginning, BBR's design brief was to produce the very best turbocharged conversion with a factory 'OEM' look from a blank canvas. We achieved this by adding a lightweight aluminium high flow intercooler pipework with an efficient front mounted intercooler without moving the battery, standard airbox (along with its affective intake), coolant expansion bottle and other ancillaries from their original position. Through careful design and a unique turbocharger layout, BBR Mazda MX-5 MK3/3.5/3.75 conversion can be installed without drilling, cutting of any bodywork or removing the front bumper! The conversion is also straightforward to reverse should clients wish to revert their car to standard format or transfer the conversion to a later vehicle.

The power gains from the BBR Stage One turbocharged Mazda MX-5 conversion are an impressive 262bhp at 7350rpm and 225lb.ft at 4350rpm for 2.0-litre MX-5 (NC) models, running a maximum conservative 0.45bar (7psi) of boost. Even running at these very low boost pressure, this equates to an incredible 230bhp at the rear wheels (on 1.8-litre engined MX-5 models the equivalent figure is 231bhp and 208lb.ft, a remarkable increase over the standard output). A 2.0-litre BBR Stage One turbocharged MX-5 will clock an impressive 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds, allied to an electronically limited 150mph top speed, endowing the handsome roadster with genuine supercar pace.

Please see our road test section for glowing reviews by many of the UK’s highly critical journalists and a great review below from evo magazines track car of the year with Marino Franchitti:

By using the original manifold back exhaust system and air filter, the BBR Stage One Mazda MX-5 MK3/3.5/3.75 turbocharger conversion produces a discrete, quiet performance.

Due to the natural silencing effect of the turbocharger, the exhaust noise is lower than standard, which makes the conversion a civilised but potent device. For clients who seek a more distinctive, supercar style exhaust note, BBR’s Supersport silencer can be installed.
