Brackley, Northamptonshire, 7th September 2015

Leading Mazda performance specialist BBR is pleased to unveil two stages of engine performance upgrades for the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G versions of the Mazda 3.

Representing the culmination of eleven months of intensive in-house development, BBR’s 2.0-Skyactiv-G tuning program has successfully removed the key electronic and mechanical restrictions on 120, 145 and 165PS models of the Mazda 3 / 6, CX-3 and CX-5, releasing the full potential of the new direct-injection powerplant. BBR’s testing program revealed that these versions of the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G are identical mechanically, meaning that both stages of upgrade suit all power variants.

BBR ‘Super 170’

The entry level ‘Super 170’ upgrade benefits from BBR’s renowned Starchip ECU software package, with revised fuel and ignition calibration designed to optimise performance across the rev range from 2,000 rpm right through to the 7,000 rpm limiter, whilst removing the electronic throttle restriction from the 120 PS version.

Post conversion, the realised gains from the 2.0-litre Skyactive-G engine are particularly noticeable from 4,000 rpm upwards, especially on the 120 PS variant – which recorded an unexpectedly healthy 136 bhp on BBR’s chassis dyno in standard tune – culminating in a peak output of 169.7 bhp at 6300rpm, a gain of 34 bhp.

Similarly torque increases are impressive throughout the rev range, culminating in a peak gain of 11 lb.ft and a total figure of 163 lb.ft at just 4250 rpm, making the Mazda 3 easier, faster and more exciting to drive.

Available now, the BBR Super 170 package is priced at £499.00 including installation. (A DIY version will be launched soon.)

BBR ‘Super 185’

Building on the foundation of the BBR Super 170 upgrade package, BBR’s technicians have realised further performance enhancements courtesy of a stainless steel exhaust manifold. Designed to optimise the exhaust scavenging technology incorporated in the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G motor, BBR’s manifold features a 4-2-1 configuration to enhance engine flexibility whilst maximising the spread of torque.
In addition, on the inlet side repeated testing on BBR’s in-house chassis dyno revealed that the OEM Mazda airbox represents a restriction so this is replaced with a cold air induction system featuring a K&N high flow filter, realising an additional 3-4 bhp improvement.

In combination with a revised BBR Starchip ECU calibration, peak power increases to 185 bhp at 6300rpm, with noticeable linear gains from just 3250rpm. In addition the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G’s torque output is further improved, with a total of 173 lb.ft at just 4000 rpm and over 150 lb.ft available between 3000 and 6500rpm, highlighting the Super 185’s user-friendly nature, given that it represents a 50 bhp gain compared to standard tune.

Priced at £1795.00 fitted, the BBR Super 185 package is on sale now. Customers can elect to exclude the cold air induction system and opt for a replacement K&N panel filter, reducing the total price to £1480.00. (A DIY Package will be available shortly)

A BBR sports exhaust system is also available for 2.0-litre Skyactiv engined Mazda models. Comprising of a 2.5 inch diameter centre section with a high flow emissions compliant sports catalyst (RRP £495.00) and a stainless steel rear silencer featuring BBR branded 3.5 inch tailpipes (RRP £395.00,) this optional extra produces a subtle, sporty exhaust note designed to appeal to Mazda enthusiast drivers.
